As a young adult it was determined that Richard Chase had erectile dysfunction, apparently due to repressed anger. Chase could not mantain a healthy relationship because of this which caused him a lot of frustration. He believed that by drinking the blood of animals he would be cured and able to achieve an erection. This was only the start of his increasingly odd beliefs.
